Celebrate Children's Dental Health Month With A Trip To The Dentist!

Caring For Children Throughout February and Beyond

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and at Marshfield Pediatric Dentistry, we’re celebrating all month long! Pediatric dentistry is critical for your child’s oral development, and the oral care habits that they develop as children will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

Because of this, we encourage you to celebrate this event with an appointment at Marshfield Pediatric Dentistry. Whether you’re bringing your child to the dentist for their first time, or you are looking for a new dentist in Marshfield, we’re always happy to meet new patients!

The History of Children’s Dental Health Month

Children’s Dental Health Month is sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA). It’s a time when dentists can spread awareness about the importance of proper childhood oral care, teeth cleanings, and preventative dentistry.

National Children’s Dental Health Month started as a one-day event held in Cleveland Ohio on February 3, 1941. By 1955, the observance of this event had been extended to a week. Then, in 1981, the ADA extended the program to a full month, and it gained the title “National Children’s Dental Health Month.”

Tooth Decay Is the Most Common Preventable Childhood Disease

One of the goals of National Children’s Dental Health Month is to spread awareness about preventing common childhood oral health issues, such as tooth decay.

Tooth decay is the most common preventable childhood disease in America. Around 42% of kids from ages 2-11 have at least one cavity in their primary (baby) teeth, according to the NIH. In addition, 21% of kids between the ages of 2-11 have decay in their permanent teeth.

However, tooth decay can easily be stopped and reversed with regular six-month oral exams and teeth cleanings, preventative treatments like dental sealants and fluoride rinses, and proper oral hygiene habits. So, this month, make it a priority to fight back against childhood tooth decay!
